My writing focuses primarily on political economy, investments, and the history of financial markets. Some of my works are aimed at a popular audience and others at professional and academic readers. In addition to my books, which have been translated into Chinese, German, Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish,and Vietnamese. I have authored or coauthored numerous articles in professional journals. A study based on 16 core journals ranks me among the ten most widely published authors in finance in the period 1990-2001. Since 1989, I have served as the book review editor for Financial Analysts Journal. In a very different vein, my light verse has appeared in publications ranging from Playbill and the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal.
I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. After earning a bachelors degree in history and a masters of business administration from Harvard University, I began a Wall Street career that has encompassed corporate bond trading, securities analysis, investment strategy, and money management. I live in New York City with my wife, Columbia University Professor of Music Elaine Sisman. We have two children, Arielle and Daniel. My nonprofessional interests include tennis, travel, and philanthropy.
